HSRP standby router for traffic loadsharing

Hi All,

Can we push traffic from Lan to standby router configured in HSRP group using BGP attributes.

We have two routers connected to two service provider links and also connected to each other and running IBGP between each other and EBGP with the providers.

Can we use IBGP link to push traffic from the standby router of HSRP group.

Hello there,

You can manipulate routing using BGP attributes, weight, local pref, etc. But not to send to a hsrp group.

There are ways that you can load balance using hsrp. The most straight forward is to have 2 default gateways in the network and have 2 hsrp groups on the routers. One failing over to the other in times of problems.

Another way that you could do this would be to have some policy routing on the acive router and send specific traffic over to the standby router.

If you would be able to provide some more details on what you're trying to achieve, then I can advise further.

it is possible what you want to achieve... but as said above you cannot manipulate BGP parameters to send tyo an HSRP group.

you can configure weights/Localpref for a particluar set of routes and make the router prefer the IBGP connection over the BGP.

So when the packets reaches the HSRP active router, it will check the routing table and choose the IBGP connection and send the packet back to the standby router towards your edge..This would add an extra hop but that should not be a concern on the LAN (<1ms).

All said the packet will always hit the active router first and there is no way BGP attribute can be manipluated to change this.

This way you can achieve load sharing on the links towards the edge but not on the links connected to LAN side of the HSRP peers.

If you are looking for load sharing, replace your HSRP setup with GLBP:

I just wanted to know...

If we run HSRP between two CE routers connected to Layer2 Switch, Can we use the standby router for loadsharing of the return traffic and forward from the central DC site enroute Active router IBGP link with the standby router ... ofcourse with manipulation of BGP attributes.

I understand all the traffic will at any point of time hit the primary router of HSRP group.

Hi there,

A little more detail on your config would be good.

Where have you got you iBGP peer set to? It can't be to the hsrp address, it's best to go for a loopback.

The hsrp is usually used for ensuring users have a default gateway, as routing should be able to sort itself out.

IBGP IP will be different from HSRP group address.

Yes as said, its best to use loopback for the iBGP peering, and the HSRP group address just as a default gateway for your LAN.
