I have Cisco 3640 Router and have a problem when the router boots it shows an error message and the router enters the rommon mode.

I tried 2 other DRAMs from another working router and the same error message appeared, note that this router was previously working properly.
So please do you have any idea about what could fix this problem.

Hi,
Do you install two 32M RAM modules or only one? If two are present and they are operational in another router it could be a hardware failure in SIMM1.
There is little to do then except trying to use the second RAM f.e in SIMM2. If this fails then you might replace the router.

Hi ,
What is happening is that the second DRAM SIMM sometimes isn't detected or isn't working correctly. Whenever this happens the Rom Monitor of the 3640 will generate this error message (either on power-up or during reload):
ERROR: Illegal system memory (DRAM) configuration.
The current system memory configuration is:
SIMM 0 SIMM 1 SIMM 2 SIMM 3
--------------------------------------
32M-DUAL
Possibly the SIMM itself is bad or there could be a problem with the Mainboard of the 3640. Before RMAing this again, please
remove each of the DRAM SIMMs from their
sockets and then replace them carefully.
Check whether the DRAM's seated in bank's properly or not.
Thanks,
satish
