Import timer expired

Hello all,

I have three routers ( one Juniper M10i and two Cisco VXRs) configured with full mesh i-BGP, one of the VXR BGP session with M10i is disconnecting frequently due to Error: hold time expired.

The log server shows:

Oct 21 13:56:52.496 NST: BGP: Import timer expired. Walking from 1 to 1

I have configured OSPF as IGP, network in broadcast, peering done with loopback address and also the update source is loopback address.

Help will be appreciate.

Thank you,

Uttam

Re: Import timer expired

have you changed any timers setting?

The Cisco IOS default keepalive timer is 60 seconds and the default HoldTime is 180 seconds, while Juniper routers use a default keepalive of 30 seconds and a default HoldTime of 90 seconds. Juniper routers uses a default of 30/90 seconds - Accordingly if a Cisco and a Juniper routers are peering they will agree to use 30/90 seconds. By default you shouldnt have to change any timers!!

unless you are experience layer 1 issues!!

Re: Import timer expired

Hi Franco,

Thanks for the response. I haven't configured hello and dead interval on router, it is agree to use default 30/90 seconds as you have told.

But one question, does it affect by bandwidth limit with 8K between iBGP peers? Cause it couldn't increment the updates and the connections is breaking ?

Also both routers are configured with MTU path discovery mode.

Thank you,

Uttam

Re: Import timer expired

i beleive if there is congestion on the network then that could potencially break bgp sessions, causing dropping of BGP messages!
