Hi.

Do all routers have the capability of acting as DNS servers? I see that many hosts use the Internet access routers address as the DNS server.I know the router will get It's global DNS server settings via dhcp or statically.Does It have a default configuration to use stored dns addresses and become a DNS server Its self or automatically forward DNS queries to the global DNS server ?

Hi,

yes you're right but the caching feature is limited compared to a real DNS server.

Here's a link explaining it all: http://nil.si/ipcorner/RouterDNS/

Hi,

There is no default config.  You have to configure the router manually with DNS name, servers, etc...

Hi.Am I right In saying that the router has software that allows It to forward or resolve DNS host queries If setup manually as you've pointed out?
