IOS Compatability

John Huthmaker

Hello Everyone,

Thank you all in advance.  I have a Cisco 3750 router that is currently on IOS 12.2.  This router serves as our VOIP gateway, and sends and recieves tons of faxes.  We use the XMediusFax server.  It works really well.  However, as of lately we have had some trouble with faxing.  XMedius has essentially told us they cant support us if we are running this older IOS.  They have asked us to upgrade to 12.4(22)t.

My boss just asked me a good question though.  Is that IOS compatable with the versions of Call Manager, Unity, and UCCX.  I was hoping someone here might know the answer.  I'm pretty much a beginner at Cisco stuff as I only hold a CCENT.

Here are the versions of the above that we are running.

Call Manager - 7.1.5.30000-1

Unity - 7.0.2.10000-38

UCCX - 7.0(1)SR05_Build504

Thanks

John

They have asked us to upgrade to 12.4(22)t.

I'm no expert with CUCM nor am I an expert of XMediusFax.  But I'm very certain I've never (ever) seen an IOS for a 3750 Layer2/Layer 3 switch with a version called "12.4(22)T".

is it possible you meant a 3660 router?

I am not sure if your switch has 16 or 32 mb flash but I can tell you this:  The 3750 can run either the 12.2 or the 15.0 IOS.  There is no IOS for the 3750 with version number 12.4.

Thats interesting. That version number is the one the XMedius guys told us to upgrade to.  I guess I'm going to have to call them again.

Thanks for pointing this out.  I'm contacting the contractor who is suppose to do the upgrade tonight.  I'll find out which IOS he is planning on installing.

With the versions of Unity, UCCX, and Call Manager I listed above, is there any known IOS's that are incompatible?  Or can we just go to the latest version IOS?

Edit: I just spoke with XMedius.  They said if this appliance supports a 15 series IOS, then we would want to update to 15.1.4m (nothing higher).  So a couple questions about that particular IOS.  Will it work with the Call Manager, UCCX, and Unity that we have, and how can I tell if this device supports that exact IOS?

They said if this appliance supports a 15 series IOS, then we would want to update to 15.1.4m (nothing higher).

Some of the people who are reading this post are probably shaking their head (at me!).

I hate to point dirty finger but looks like the XMedius people can't tell the difference between a router and/or a switch.  There is no such IOS version for the 3750 called the "15.1(4)M".  The HIGHEST IOS version for the 3750 will be based upon your Flash memory.  If you have a flash memory of 16 mb then the highest you can go is 12.2(55)SE4 and if you have a flash memory of 32 mb then the highest you can go is 15.0(1)SE2.

By the way, the version 15.1(4)M are for the ISR G1 and ISR G2 routers.  Here is the Release Note.

May I ask what feature(s) or bug fix(es) does the XMedius are looking for?  I'm not say that I'm NOT in favour of IOS upgrades, but I'm suspecting the XMedius crew are either stalling for time or don't know what's going on.

Essentially we have been having an issue where some of our users experience problems sending or recieving faxes.  Xmedius started a packet trace.  They opened up the packes for faxes that failed within wireshark, and pointed that our router is the problem.  When I telnet to the router, they saw it was on 12.2.  They stated that this is known to be a problem with that particular IOS, and that they wont support anything less than 12.4.

John,

You must have another device in your network that functions as the VoIP/Fax Gateway because the 3750 can't provide neither of those functions.

Their support people are used to dealing with routers, not switches and mistakenly are giving you incorrect IOS recommendations.

More than likely, the switch in question is directly attached to the router. Can you telnet to this device instead?

If it is a cisco router, you can view the device details from the switch by issuing 'show cdp neighbor detail'.

Regards,

Edison

I'm not seeing a router in here.  Suposedly the one in question is our "MPLS Router".  I dont know enough about networking though.  Here is what show cdp neighbor detail gave me:

Scratch everything I said.  Our two core routers are both 3825's.  I just walked in and checked.

Bingo.

SO can you do a "sh version"?
