IOS not showing in FLASH

Hi,

I noticed the ISO had disappeared from flash and I get this error on booting:.

%Error opening c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin (file not found)

The router boots ok and works great, I have lots of stuff for my CME in there and I do not feel like formatting the flash...

Any idea how I can see the IOS so I can remove it and upgrade it ? I even tried to FTP the c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin  to an outside server, it fails after 33MB.

I do not have boot image secure as the file is "missing" , the router does not allow the command to go thru.

Any help is appreciated.

As you see: lines 1 and 2 are missing, it starts at "3"

guess 1 or  2 must be the line for IOS

2811#sh flash

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

Please let's get back to that software I have suggested. You have used it incorrectly, as you have selected your hard disk as the target. That is not what I had in mind - what I need is a file image of the CF card. Let's do it once again, here are the steps.

After starting the program, in the first screen, select the CF card just as you did and click on the Continue button. Then, in the target selection screen, double-click the FILE option in the list and insert the name of the file you want to save the image as. In the same file save window, select the type of image: "Raw image (dd image)". Then click on the Continue button again. In the next screen, it should not warn you about formatting a drive anymore, and after clicking on the START button, the CF card shall be stored as an image.

I understand that your issues may be solved with the new CF card but this is such an obscure error that I am extremely strongly interested in learning what really happened. Please be patient with me here and try to go over this exercise once again. Thank you!

Best regards,

Peter

does a dir flash: show anything?

You could try a delete flash:c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin If you are just wanting to remove the file

IOS not showing in FLASH

Thank you, James,

Not really showing more.

c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin is my production IOS, If I remove it, the router wont run...

Beside, I doutb I can remove it as the router does not see it.

IOS not showing in FLASH

Thank you Peter,

As I stated in my original post,

I do not have boot image secure as the file is "missing" , the router does not allow the command to go thru.

Now I do no secure boot-image fom the console, and it confrms  IOS relisience is not active

Cisco Employee

IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

There is a remote possibility that the IOS Resiliency (secure boot-image) has been activated in the past but the original configuration has been lost so the router does not "remember" the IOS Resiliency was activated.

Try entering these two commands in the global configuration while accessing the router via the console port (not remotely!):

secure boot-image ! may produce error messages - ignore them

no secure boot-image

Afterwards, check whether the IOS has been reinstated into the FLASH.

Best regards,

Peter

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

Thank you Paul,

Sh boot command does not exist

I know the IOS exists somewhere because the router boots ok.

IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

I am scratching my head. Hmmm... Would you mind running fsck flash: command and see if any errors are reported or corrected?

Best regards,

Peter

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

2811#fsck flash:

Checking the partition table and boot sector...

Checking FAT, Files and Directories...

Reclaiming unused space...

Updating FAT...

fsck of flash: complete

2811#

Nothing....

there must be a way to "repair" thatt flash.... In fact, the reason I need to see it is because I want to delete it to upgrade to a newer version that allows Network Object Groups...(c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-20.YA2.bin does).

But if it can't see it, it can't delete it.

Where can I see the boot image it uses upon booting ?  Can I do a display of

boot system flash:c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin ?????

To see under what flash directory it is located ? I know it's there, somewhere.....

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

I wonder - do you have a CF card reader somewhere around? With any luck, the CF card is formatted with FAT filesystem so it should be plain simple to check its contents under Windows or Linux.

Peter

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

Yes, verified with a compact flash reader, all the files are there as per the dir flash:, but no IOS.

The IOS must be there because when I add the 59 MB on the compact flash card + the 23 MB left on it, I am missing 45MB to total the 128MB capacity....

45 MB is the size of the IOS....

Re:IOS not showing in FLASH

how about

show bootvar

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

Any idea how I can see the IOS so I can remove it and upgrade it ?

Two ways ...

1.  "sh version" will show you what is the complete filename of the IOS and the location of the file; and

2.  "dir flash: | i bin"

You have run the "sh version" so the path of the direction "should be":  System image file is "flash:c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin"

I said "should be" because if someone's deleted the file after the router has rebooted, then you need to think about the next step:  Copy the IOS back into the CF.

show bootvar

This command is invalid or unavailable to the router.  Instead do this command "sh run | beg boot-start-marker".

NOTE:   I notice that you have three crashinfo files that were recently created.  You may want to look into that.

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

Thank you Leo

Sh version will tel me what IOS loaded, not where it is located, as you can read I lost the IOS

I will try these command when I get to the lab,

IOS not showing in FLASH

I did not delete any files since 07/27 date at witch the file was there as per my posting.

Since there is 45 MB 'missing" on my CF card, I am under the impression the IOS is there but hidden...

I can not copy becuse all I have left is 23MB, and even, I need room for the upgrade IOS....

The crashinfo is there because I tried 3 times to run "test aaa" when I hit return, the router reboots.

Looks like I will have to format the whole thing....

How can an IOS be there and 4 days after it's gone !!??!!!!

Ho well, the joy of Cisco certifications !

IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

Let's try to do one more thing... Windows chkdsk or scandisk utility is perhaps more thorough that the fsck utility in IOS. Can you try to put the CF card into a card reader and running the Windows "disk doctor" over it?

If this fails, I have a last option suggestion. If you have Linux around, you can do a sector-by-sector copy of the entire CF into a file and upload it somewhere so that I can download it and have a look at it myself just as if I had the original CF card. Would you be willing to try this?

Best regards,

Peter

IOS not showing in FLASH

File and folder verification is complete.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

  128,167,936 bytes total disk space.
45,207,552 bytes in 5 hidden files.
       36,864 bytes in 8 folders.
   60,260,352 bytes in 167 files.
   22,663,168 bytes available on disk.

4,096 bytes in each allocation unit.
31,291 total allocation units on disk.
5,533 allocation units available on disk.

Did not want to do a chkdsk /f, not sure what the 'fix' will do to my CF, but might the IOS be the 45MB in the hidden  files ?

John,

Would you be willing to do the sector-by-sector copy of your CF for me? Do you have a Linux machine somewhere to which you can connect the CF card reader?

I do not have linux.

The only "linux box" I have is the vmware image that runs the OS of my CUCM.

Will this work ?

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

No, I do not think that Linux would allow you to perform the privileged low-level operations. Okay, let's try it with Windows.

Download this utility:

http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/HDDRawCopy1.02Portable.exe

I have not used the utility so it's up to you to experiment with this a little bit. What I need you to do is to make a raw image of the CF card and upload it somewhere for me to download and analyze. Save the CF card as "Raw image (dd image)", not as the compressed image that this tools suggests by default.

Best regards,

Peter

Peter

How can a image copy help in viewing the missing file ?

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

I have used your image to mount it under Linux in the same way I would mount the CF card alone. Simply put, I am working with your CF card image just as if I had the entire CF card with me personally.

The IOS file c2800nm-adventerprisek9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin is indeed present in the image! For some reason - and I do not know how it was done - it has the FAT filesystem attributes set to hidden and system. I am absolutely sure that if you configure your Windows machine to show you the system and hidden files in the Windows File Explorer, or if you use Total Commander and configured it to show hidden and system files, you will be able to see the file. It should be completely sufficient to remove both the hidden and system attributes at this stage and the IOS image should be visible also to IOS. Check the attached Listing.txt for the complete listing of all files on your CF card, plus the listing of attributes of all files in the root directory.

I am somewhat more worried about the state of the filesystem, though. My filesystem check also revealed 49 errors concerning duplicate file names on the filesystem, and the FAT copies are not identical. It appears as if some files have been in progress of being downloaded to the CF card when the router was either restarted, or the CF card was pulled out prematurely. The list of errors is attached in the CheckResults.txt. Notice that the duplicate file is always stored a number of seconds later than the first file. To be honest, I am not sure how to solve this issue, as you may end up restoring the wrong copy of the file.

Because the contents of the CF card are corrupted - there is no doubt about it - I am afraid it would be best if you backed up the files you are sure they are okay, and format it completely anew. If you continue using the CF card without reformatting or without running chkdsk over it, you may end up in losing more files.

Best regards,

Peter

P.S.: You may remove the image from the DropBox - we don't want other people to download it.

IOS not showing in FLASH

Thank you, I see the corruption... Well I dont know what happen, as it work well a week before.

Since I need the 2811 to pursue my certs, I will wait for my new CF and reinstall from scratch. Thanks again for you efforts.

Re: IOS not showing in FLASH

John,

You are welcome. Please keep in mind that your current CF card appears to be physically okay, just the stored data is corrupted. After formatting and restoring the correct contents, your current CF card would also work. Don't throw it away.

Best regards,

Peter
