I want to upgrade a Cisco 2621 router IOS. The current IOS in flash is c2600-jk8o3s-mz.122-17.bin. The closest latest version I could find is c2600-ik9o3s3-mz.123-22.bin. What is the difference between the jk and the ik and the s and s3 in the IOS names? I want to make sure I am using the correct IOS. The router has IP Routing/Firewall FS/ and VPN abilities. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a white paper on name conventions.

You can also go to www.cisco.com/go/fn and put ios name in there and it will compare them so you can see if there is a feature in there you might need

rwyates--
thanks for the links. I used the feature comparison tool to find the exact IOS featureset name I need for the upgrade. The device is a Router 2621 with ENTERPRISE/FW/IDS PLUS IPSEC 56 features. Now, it looks like I can only upgrade to 12.2.40 because that release is the last available with ENTERPRISE/FW/IDS PLUS IPSEC 56 features. Am I understanding correctly that I can only upgrade to 12.2.40?
Thanks again.. JP

You can also upgrade to:
c2600-ik9o3s3-mz.12.2-15.T9.bin
c2600-ik9o3s3-mz.12.3-22.bin
These are the same feature set but with a more advanced encryption (3DES, 168 bit) in addition to plain DES (56 Bit).
