IOS versions ! Confused !

Guys

I have 4 catalyst6500's running various versions of IOS

Can someone explain what the relevant differences are in the versions.

s72033_rp-IPSERIVCESK9_WAN-n, version 12.2(18)SXF12a

s72033_rp-IPSERIVCESK9_WAN-vm, version 12.2(18)SXF11

I'm guessing from trying to locate information on the Cisco website that SXF12a is the higher version ?

Also what would be the highest version of IOS to put onto our switches ?

Thanks

Correct, in addition to that - the SXF12a image you've shown is non-modular while the SXF11 image is modular.

Each version available in CCO contains the modular and non-modular release.

If you aren't aware of the 6500 Software modularity, please take a moment and read the following URL:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps708/product_promotion0900aecd80312844.htm

As for the latest IOS version available in the 6500, it depends on the track. The SXF track has the SXF15 while the SXH track has SXH3a

Edison,

Thanks for the prompt reply, I'm also trying to understand what the various versions of the IOS software means.. ie

s72033_rp-IPSERIVCESK9_WAN-n, version 12.2(18)SXF12a

WAN-n ?????

s72033_rp-IPSERIVCESK9_WAN-vm, version 12.2(18)SXF11

WAN-vm ????

By looking at the download page, the 'v' in the filename denotes modular features.

I haven't seen the 'n' in the filenames from SXF12a in this list:

Thanks for the info.

Note; there was a typo in the images listed, they should have read:

s72033-ipservicesk9-mz.122-33.SXH3.bin

s72033-ipservicesk9_wan-mz.122-18.SXF12a.bin

What "modular" differences, specifically, are you referring to?

Each release version has a regular version of the IOS and a modular version of the IOS.

For the modular features, please read the link I provided at the beginning of this thread.

I also posted a listed of filenames and what services each filename provides in a 2nd post on this thread.
