IP Multicast Rate-Limit ???

Hello,

I run streaming multicast video cameras on my network.

I stumbled upon the command ip multicast rate-limit.

When I configured a test setup in my lab (mulitcast camera source and a few routers) and tried the command it simply did not work.

Moreover, when I went to use the command on a 3900 router in my lab, it was not there.

I take it this command has been depricated?

Thanks,

Phill

IP Multicast Rate-Limit ???

Hello Phill,

You are most probably correct: the IP Multicast Command Reference for IOS 15.0M says that the command has been removed in 15.0(1)M and 12.2(33)SRE IOS releases:

Best regards,

IP Multicast Rate-Limit ???

Thanks,

I suppose this command has been discontinued in favor of the IGMP State Limit Feature?

IP Multicast Rate-Limit ???

Hello Phill,

I can not say for sure. IGMP State Limit limits the number of joined groups on an interface or globally per device, while the multicast rate-limit was supposed to drop packets from multicast streams if their amount exceeded a predefined threshold. In a sense, the multicast rate-limit behaved like a traffic policing specifically applied to selected multicast streams. The IGMP State Limit does not directly limit the amount of traffic flowing to a particular multicast group.

Best regards,

Peter
