IP SLA and Ping to external IP Address

We have SLA configured for failover from primary to DBU on Cisco 871.  There are about 170 sites with the same config.  We are experienceing problems on one site.

Partial Config is as below

ip sla 1
icmp-echo source-interface FastEthernet4
timeout 10000
threshold 1000
frequency 30
ip sla schedule 1 life forever start-time now

track 10 rtr 1 reachability
delay down 180 up 3

Below are SLA and track stats.

Round Trip Time (RTT) for       Index 1
        Latest RTT: NoConnection/Busy/Timeout
Latest operation start time: *08:15:36.158 UTC Tue Jun 18 2002
Latest operation return code: Timeout
Number of successes: 0
Number of failures: 53
Operation time to live: Forever

Track 10
  Response Time Reporter 1 reachability
  Reachability is Down
    1 change, last change 13:28:59
Delay up 3 secs, down 180 secs
  Latest operation return code: Timeout

Track remains down no matter what.  We have verified primary link to be up and have verified that Cisco uses primary link for all traffic.  When dug a little further, we noticed that the first ping to always times out.

ping sou fa 4

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to, timeout is 2 seconds:
Packet sent with a source address of
Success rate is 80 percent (4/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 152/168/192 ms

Tha above behavior is seem for all external IP Addresses.  With first ping timing out all the time and SLA's inability (as far as I know) to retry leaves track in down status.

What can we do to resolve this?

Re: IP SLA and Ping to external IP Address

What does the default-route look like if you have one ie. is it using a next-hop IP or is it using an interface as the next-hop ?

Re: IP SLA and Ping to external IP Address

Hi Jon,

It is using next-hop IP.  I have tried setting it to WAN interface, DHCP and next-hop.
