IP-VSAT Module

Hi all,

i have my one client who is accessing internet through satellite, currently they have deployed HUGHES product, i want to replace it with Cisco, can anyone suggest which product to use.

And also can IP-VSAT module be used with ASA5510 series or any other ASA device.

Regards,

Re: IP-VSAT Module

Hello Hussain,

here is reference to the IP-VSAT module.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/12_3t/12_3t14/feature/guide/gtstltnm.html

Check if the satellite is using the GILAT

The NM-1VSAT-GILAT network module is supported only in Gilat SkyEdge-compatible satellite communications networks. For more information, go to http://www.gilat.com/.

For installation see:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/interfaces/nm/hardware/installation/guide/satnm.html

I think you will need to install it on a modular Cisco router (Cisco 3725,3825,3745,3845 or cisco 2800) and then connect a LAN interface to the ASA 5510.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Re: IP-VSAT Module

Be careful - both the Hughes and Gilat VSAT systems require a propreitary VSAT hub earth station and are not interoperable. In other words, the Gilat VSAT module requires a Gilat hub earth station; it won't work with a Hughes hub. In some parts of the world they both offer commercial hub services (although usually with some minimum number of remote sites, such as 50 or 100). There is also the consumer version of HughesNet in the US. Note that the Hughes system has been pretty well optimized to work over satellite. I doubt you would see any performance gains with Gilat (if that is your goal). If you are having performance problems, it may be that you (or your service provider) are over-subscribed on satellite bandwidth.
