Is 2801 good enough to replace 3640

My client is currently using a 3640 with 16Mb flash & 64MB RAM for Frame relay traffic & SNA using DLSW. Since 3640 is configured for 10mbps half, there are a lot of collisions.

They have a spare brand new 2801 which is unused. The 2801 has Enterprise services IOS and 64mb flash/128mb RAM supports DLSW as well.

Can this 2801 be a good option to replace the 3640 or is there a sizing issue as the Frame relay users are around 800? Can 2801 perform better than 3640 in terms of processing capabilities (processor speed). Can the 2801 handle large traffic like the 3640?

Hi Kevin

The 2801 has better processing performance than the 3640. The 2801 is rated for 90000 packets per second (pps) or 46Mbps throughout whereas the 3640 is only rated for up to 70000 pps or 36Mbps.

So in terms of raw processing power, the 2801 is a better router for the job.

As long as you've got the right interfaces, I would suggest that you go for the 2801.

With respect to the processing power, the 2801 should do. The 2801 can do up to 90kpps, while the 3640 does 70kpps.

My main issue with the 2801 (the 2800 series) is adding additional ethernet interfaces. You will have to use the switch modules to expand on ethernet.
