Is this combination of SPAs on a SIP truly not supported?

I've got a 7604 with Sup-720 and a SIP-400 with three 2-Gig SPAs installed.  Upon booting up I get an error message that states bandwidth is exceeded on the line card, and the combination of SPA interfaces is not supported. I had no luck searching for a document that would describe any such bad combinations.

The SIP/SPAs all came up and seem to be working OK, but I'm worried about the error msg. Below is a portion of the log showing the SIP/SPAs coming on-line and the error msg. Below that is a 'show mod'.  Is the installed combination of SPAs truly not compatible with each other?

Hi,

It is not because combination of SUP and SIP but there is oversizing rules for SIP-400.

The total aggregated bw (combination of SPA in SIP) supported is oc-48 per SIP-400.

If you are below oc-48 you will not get any warning message.but if you are above oc-48 you will get warning message ,

your router will continue working but it can malfunction or performance can be degraded.

In you case you already have crossed 4gb bw in slot-2 hence the warning message.

Please find link below for few information

Hope this is useful

In reading the document relating to the SIP-400, I found these two references:

Scalable Bandwidth with Intelligent Network Services for Next-Generation Applications
The unique value provided by the Cisco 7600 Series is the convergence supported from the physical layer to a highly scalable application layer. The Cisco 7600 Series can scale from 10 Megabit Ethernet to 10 Gigabit Ethernet in the LAN, and DS-0 to OC-48/STM-16 in the WAN.

How do they state 10 Gigabit Ethernet in the LAN if you can only have up to an OC-48 worth of bandwidth on the SIP-400?

Supported SPAs:
Ethernet
• 2-port 1 GE SPA (V1 and V2)
• 5 port 1 GE SPA (V2 only)
• 1-port 10GbE SPA LAN PHY (V2 only)

Again, how can the SIP-400 support  a 5port 1 GE SPA or a 1-port 10Gbe SPA if the SIP-400 is limited to OC-48 speeds?  Just curious.

Hi,

There are two cases

1- when total bw is below oc-48

all SPA types can be combined

1.       For release 12.2(33)SRB and above, the following SPA combinations are supported on SIP-400:

a.       Any mix of POS, ATM, CEoP and serial SPAs up to an aggregate of OC-48. This implies that 1xOC-48 POS SPAs have to be used alone in a SIP-400, and cannot be combined with other SPAs

b.       The Cisco 7600 SIP-400 supports installation of any combination of OC-3 or OC-12 POS or ATM SPAs up to a combined ingress bandwidth of OC-24 rates, when installed with a single 2-Port Gigabit Ethernet SPA

c.       Two SPA-2X1GE SPAs

2.       With 12.2(33)SRD1 and above , add FE SPA and E3/T3 serial SPA in mix allowed combinations

2- when above oc-48

The SIP400 is running in oversubcription mode. In this case, only three oversubscribed combination

     are supported : 1 x 5GE ; 2x5GE ; 1 x 10GE.

By default , when using two 2xGE-V2-SPA, no additionnal SPA can be used, because of the oversubscription beyond 4 GE bandwidth.
