line cards with poE ports

HI everybody!

Cisco 4500, 6500 switches start powering up the modules from top.If there is sufficient power available then start powering the lower modules. Once all the modules have been powered up and there is still power avaiable, then highest PoE- port on top most module powers up to power the connected device.

How about when switch has to power down the modules because there is not enough power from the supply?

Would switch powers down the module from the bottom first or it first powers downs the PoE devices connected to Module and if available power is still not enough, switch then powers down the module?

Thanks a lot!

Re: line cards with poE ports

Hello Sarah,

what you say is reasonable I would expect the same: before powering down a line module the switch should stop to provide power to POE devices first.

We got sometimes warning messages telling a switch cannot provide poe to an additional device.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
