Hi,

The details provided are 10 Mbps metro ethernet link. How to calculate the link utilization ??

FastEthernet0/1 is up, line protocol is up

Hardware is Gt96k FE, address is 000e.83fe.1a91 (bia 000e.83fe.1a91)

Description: ****** AP-Circle to Sanath Nagar 10MBPS metro ethernet link ******

Internet address is 172.16.25.141/30

MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10240 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,

reliability 255/255, txload 43/255, rxload 111/255

Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set

Keepalive set (10 sec)

Full-duplex, 10Mb/s, 100BaseTX/FX

ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00

Last input 00:00:05, output 00:00:00, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters 1w4d

Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 141

Queueing strategy: fifo

Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)

5 minute input rate 4465000 bits/sec, 873 packets/sec

5 minute output rate 1727000 bits/sec, 302 packets/sec

Hi, use some simple SNMP tool like PRTG (search in google) to manitor link utilization.

Hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

This is not the answer iam looking for.

regds

Nasheer.

Monitoring tools like MRTG, PRTG, Netflow etc are the best methods to understand the trend of bandwidth utilisation. The tools help you get the usage trend on hourly, daily, weekly, monthly & yearly basis.

However if dont have any tools & are relying on interface statistics to understand the link utilisation then "5 min input / output rate" can give a rough idea of link utilisation at that instance. But you cant derive a trend based on this instant usage.

pls rate all helpful posts.

hai ,

Narayam i know what is MRTG ..cud you pls xplain abt PRTG

Thanks

You may want to refer this website for understanding PRTG & free download:

Marking Paolo's response as a 1 is really unfair, if indeed it was you. The people on these forums are here to help others, they don't get paid for it and their advice is free. Paolo has helped many people with his experience and expertise and his response was far from unhelpful.

If it was not the answer you were looking for that suggests there is an answer you were looking for in which case if you know the answer why post the question ?

There are times when marking a post as 1 is applicable but i don't personally think this is one of them and people like Paolo should be encouraged to continue in these forums.

I totally agreed with Jon on this. It's properly not to use 1 rating for Paolo's answer in this question.I didn't see anything wrong in his response.

Thank you guys for the appreciation that is absolutely reciprocal!

Sometime people that is "green" in networking doesn't quite grasp the simple essence of things. But eventually they will do, because "best practices" are immutable, it just takes some time to get there.

Thanks again, you made my day to begin with a smile.

Hi Paolo.

I really love your job here. You Do try to help people. so why I love your job.

Nice to see you and Jon in this forum

Best regards

Dear Paolo and All,

Iam very sorry for my action in this forum.

Reg my posting :

Which field we have to take in this 5 min input or 5 min output when we see the utilization in the router for particular serial.

How do u will decide that so and so utilization is there by seeing the above resultsi in the router.

Nasheer.

5 minute input rate 4465000 bits/sec,

5 minute output rate 1727000 bits/sec,

Convert the bits/sec to Kbps or Mbps & u get the utilisation for last 5 min. But again this is the instant throughput & not present the trend for whole day. So, this may be decieving when it comes to finding full day utilisation.
