Managing large number of devices

I work in a fairly small environment with about 20 or more routers and switches. Even in this environment I find it fairly monotonous to make configuration changes.

How do network admins in charge of 100's or 1000's of routers/switches manage this magnitude of devices?

Also are there any recommended books or links on how best to manage these types of environments

Managing a large amount of Cisco devices can be challenging. Most organizations use some type of network mnagement application such as CiscoWorks to help with this task.
