Hi,
You can change, it's only used for automatic cable type detection, I mean between two swithces normally you have to use straight cable, but with mdix auto you can use cross-over and it works.
If you change this settings on a live port it will not shutdown it.

Please rate me if I helped.

hi...
no it will not reset the port...
and i dont think so you can enable it globally on all port so you have to go for one by one configuration...
The Auto-MDIX feature is enabled by default on switches running Cisco IOS Release 12.2(18)SE or later. For releases between Cisco IOS Release 12.1(14)EA1 and 12.2(18)SE, the Auto-MDIX feature is disabled by default.
hope this will help you

Correction: Between switches (or any other pair of similar devices), you'd normally have to use a cross-over cable.
Auto-MDX will detect straight-through or cross and adjust the port role accordingly.
