Backplane - The high-speed communications bus which individual components, especially slide-in cards, are connected. The backplane's capacity determines the overall capacity of the device
Throughout - The amount of data transferred from one place to another or processed in a specified amount of time.
Now you can say the throughout is same as backplane capacity because for suppose if backplane capacity is 32 gbps which means it max throughput is also 32 gbps which means the amount of data which can be transferred from one port to another in specified time period.
So backplane is physical bus at the back of the chassis but throughput is its capacity.
If you switch has a capacity of 250 mbps and you connected something on port whose capacity is 10/100/1000 it will max work at a capacity of 100 mbps cause above that rate switch backplane cannot support.
There will be an over subscription which is known as blocking architecture.
Take it this way ..cat6k default capacity is 32 gbps and you inserted a single line card of 48 port 10/100/1000 capacity. Now if all 48 machines are connected at 100 mbps and you configure the ports as 100 mbps tha max throughput it reaches it 4.8 gbps which is below 32 gbps so no problem but on same line card if you connect servers with all 1000 MBPS and configure ports with 1000 mbps it will reach 48GBPS which is above the max backplane capacity so there is will be over subscription and packets drops will be there and result in slow traffic.
10/100/1000 mbps ports means that is the throughput of a individual port and backplane capacity is the throughput of a complete box.
