mismatch timers RIP

Hello;

I want to reduce rip timers about point- to point interfaces to multipoint interface central router.

is it possible to have different timers in the two routers? May I have any problem? ¿Can it bring me loops?

These are my configurations:

Remote

-------

interface ATM0/0.1 point-to-point

ip address x.x.x.x 255.255.255.0

router rip

version 2

timers basic 20 45 45 45

Central

-------

interface ATM0/0.1 multipoint-to-point

ip address x.x.x.x 255.255.255.0

router rip

version 2

timers basic 20 45 45 45

Thanks .

Re: mismatch timers RIP

Hi,

I faced packet drops to the destinations when i had RIP timer mismatch between two routers though i didn't have any problem in learning the prefixes.

HTH...

mismatch timers RIP

Hello,

is it possible to have different timers in the two routers? May I have any problem? ¿Can it bring me loops?

Well that depends, as an example I did the following

11.11.11.0----Router1----12.12.12.0---Router2---13.13.13.0

All of them are /24.

On router 1 I set the following timers

Router rip

timers basic 10 60 60 60

on Router 2

router rip

     timers basic 100 180 180 180

So as you can see Router 1 will send RIP messages every 10 seconds and it expect to receives an update before 60 seconds, if not it will mark the route as invalid on not accesible

                         X.X.X.X is possibly down,

On the other hand the updates being received on Router 2 will be fine as R1 will be sending updates every 10 seconds,

So as you can see you definetly can cause some problems if you configure the routers on a way that you can break things,

Hope that I understood the question
