Hi,

If you are talking about link utilization monitoring you can go for MRTG (It uses SNMP).

http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/doc/mrtg.en.html

http://www.mrtg.com/

NOTE: MRTG is not limited to monitoring traffic, though. It is possible to monitor any SNMP variable you choose. People are using MRTG, to monitor things such as System Load, Login Sessions, Modem availability and more.

HTH, please do rate all helpful replies,

Mohammed Mahmoud.

Dear Sir,

Thanks for your input, we would like to monitor the links up and down. If we use the MRTG, we may take 5 to 10 min to know the cct is down. So, we look for a tools to monitor the cct up and down. Thanks

HI,

As said in previous Reply. MRTG will help you a lot in Monitoring Line Load, Packet Loss, Latency Delays etc.,

MRTG works on SNMP Polling. It works on Unix as well as Windows. It requires Perl, Apache, RRD & MRTG installation & fine tuning of same. You can also use PRTG if you would like to monitor specific ports.

In Industry wide trend, MRTG is the recommended tool to Monitor the WAN Links.

PLS Rate if Helps ! !

HI, [PLS Rate if Helps]

Using MRTG by default you will have Graph Updated for every 5 Mintues. But, you can fine tune the Configuration to 2/3 minutes.

But Big Sister (in Unix) will be able to Poll the WAN Links / Interfaces every half Seconds / 1 Seconds or even 1 minute of time interval.

Hope this helps you. PLS RATE if Helps

Hello,

Try to use Nagios, that's a pretty cool monitoring tool - can check services on servers, host reachability, with snmp status of interface... (nagios.org - it's based on linux)

Also cacti is another useful tool, rrd based.

Dear Sir,

How to config the cacti or nagios to monitor the wan link?

we put nagios / cacti to the data center. if the WAN link of data center is down, does negios/cacti report ALL ccts down? (if there is one wan link to outside our network). how do we know exact cct down?

we know that it is not easy to do it. any idea can solve it? setup two or three nagios /cacti servers? please advice

best regards

Hello,

You can monitor interfaces using SNMP or just use PING. Nagios use host and service dependencies: NagiosServer--Switch1--Router1--Router2-... If you check services on Router2 but Router 1 is down, Nagiso will report that you have problem with R1.

Nagios has so many plugins - check commands or you can write your own.

For further details check nagios.org
