Multicast Load Balance between DS3 links

I have 2 DS3 links on 7204 router we are using ip pim dense-mode we are trying to load balance between the links. We can not use tunnel because of encapsulation overhead. Any thought?

Re: Multicast Load Balance between DS3 links

Hmm.. that's a tough one. Multicast typically doesn't like load-sharing due to the RPF checking process and the fact that most multicast apps don't handle re-sequencing of packets.

One thought would be to load-balance on a per-source basis. This would require some traffic engineering, but you could use static host routes at the downstream router to influence the RPF algorithm for particular sources to prefer one DS3 or the other. The 7204 should send the multicast stream down both DS3's initially and then prune back the one that fails the RPF check.

Another thought would be to use pim sparse-dense-mode and an access-list to identify certain groups to source from the RP and others to use dense-mode. This can get tricky since you may have to take into account the upstream PIM join messages in traffic engineering, but it might get you a way to load-balance on a per-group basis rather than a per-source basis.

Hope this helps,

John
