Multicast Video Streaming

Hi,

I need to find a solution in order to implement a video streaming project into our network and I have a few questions that maybe some of you can help me with.

The idea is to have two sources for the video streaming placed in different locations in the network for redundancy and some more receivers in different POP around the network. One solution is to create a big layer2 domain (EoSDH. Another will be to use multicast routing over the existing IP infrastructure.

Is this implementation with two sources very popular ? I've seen a lot of examples but none of them with multiple sources.

Can two sources have the same destination address, be part of the same group ? if not is there a mechanism the receiver can use to join to the second source or does it have to be smart enough to see one source down and ask for the traffic from the second source ?

Any help will be appreciated.

Regards,

Cristian

Hi Christian,

In theory, you could stream to the same destination from two sources. To all effects, that would duplicate your traffic to all the joined interfaces. It depends on the application to discern the stream based on source address. Same for redundancy, it is up to the application to use multiple streams for redundancy. There is no embedded mechanism in multicast to make redundacy at application level.

Hope this helps, please rate post if it does!

Thank you. I will then look into details for the application that we will use.
