Network Time on Cisco 801 ISDN Router

I have a number of 801 ISDN routers on my network. If I lose power to these devices the internal clock time is reset to default when the device reboots. This causes a problem with my users because we have configured a time range for when the router can dial to connect.

Is there any way I can set an NNTP service that would provide the router with the correct time after a power outage. If there is how do I limit this to get time info 2 or 3 time per day.

Sounds like the easiest way is add another time range that adds the default time to your permitted range. The router should then be able to connect using NTP to reset the clock. Once the clock is reset it would use the other time range. Not sure what the default clock is but they should be all the same for the same router and ios release.

Hi Many thanks for your reply.

I have checked the router and cannot see any NTP support, do I need an IOS upgrade

Current version is:

IOS (tm) C800 Software (C800-Y6-MW), Version 12.1(3)XG5, EARLY DEPLOYMENT RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)

TAC Support: http://www.cisco.com/tac

ROM: TinyROM version 1.4(1)

801_Housing_Tarbert uptime is 10 hours, 52 minutes

System returned to ROM by power-on

System restarted at 05:52:36 UTC Mon Dec 11 2006

Hi,

There are plenty of NTP Servers which you can configure as an NTP Server for your Router, and then every time the Router reboots, it will check the time from the NTP Server and synchronize the same with it.

You may use some of the servers from this Website

http://ntp.isc.org/bin/view/Servers/NTPPoolServers

Moreover, please be advised that some of the Servers may require prior authorization before you point your Router to them.

Secondly the configuration may be something like this:

ntp server x.x.x.x

And you can check the configuration as below:

sh ntp association

sh ntp status

HTH,

Please rate if it helps

Hi Many thanks, have tried this and am getting the following:

Tarbert>sh ntp status

^

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Tarbert>sh ntp association

^

% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Type show SNTP

Some of smaller cisco routers did not support full NTP. You may also need something like IPPLUS IOS you would need to read the release notes to see.

Ah Ha! thats it, got it now, many thanks for your help.

Hi,

Please be advised that, its always best to use the enable mode to get a valid response.

This command works only in the Priviliged mode.
