OSPF areas on the ABR

Simple question(s)...

In OSPF, how may areas can the ABR (7206 & 7507)including A0 handle. Also is it the number of interfaces in an Area or devices.

I hear that about 60 devices is the limit for Area 0. Is that true.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

There is not any hard limit on the number of areas. It becomes a question of evaluating the load that the router can handle and is affected by how many other tasks the router is handling in addition to OSPF, how many areas, how many routes in each area, how many routers within the area, and most especially how much change is taking place within the areas. If you have a network that is extemly stable and the router needs to recalculate the SPF once a day then it can handle a very large number of areas. If the router is recalculating the SPF once every minute the number of areas that can be supported is much smaller.

If you look in several different sources you will probably find several different answers about how many devices can be supported. Again there is not any hard limit and it really is a question of what you expect the performance level to be. It is not a situation of up to a limit it works and beyond that limit it is broken, but is more of a situation that as the number of devices gets larger the performance becomes slower. How slow can it get before you decide that it is no longer working?
