Ospf Fast Convergence,

Good afternoon,

My name is Rahmi Oz. I am a Network Eng for a small Telco in Charlotte, NC. My question is about OSPF Fast Convergence. Our core network is MPLS and we are only using MPLS for Fast Re-Route we are not doing any Traffic Engineering. I would like to impellent OSPF Fast Convergence features instead of using MPLS FRR in the Core.

1- Is OSPF Fast Convergence really faster than MPLS FRR?

2- What are the pros and cons of adapting OSPF Fast Convergence over MPLS FRR?

3- As far as the configuring OSPF Fast Convergence goes, Can you please review the configuration below and let me know if I am missing any thing?

interface GigabitEthernet x/y

ip ospf dead-interval minimal hello-multiplier 5

!

router ospf 10

ispf

timers throttle spf 50 50 5000

timers throttle lsa all 0 20 5000

timers lsa arrival 15

timers pacing flood 15

Thank you very much for your time and for your help.

Hi Rashmi,

If I were you, I would have definitly opted for the MPLS FRR, as things are faster at L-2 than at the L-3 (I assume), however there is a certain cost to it.

Please visit the link for more info on MPLS FRR

http://cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1829/products_feature_guide09186a0080264560.html#wp1357510

and following link for more info on OSFP Fast Convergence

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios120/120newft/120limit/120s/120s23/fasthelo.htm

Now, depending upon your underlying Hardware you may safely take the MPLS FRR or otherwise the OSPF Fast Convergence.

Hope this helps.

Wilson Samuel

Hi there Wilson,

Thank you very much for your response. We use Cisco 7609 Routers to do MPLS FRR, I however wanted to discover other options, such as OSPF Fast Convergence.

I am still debating though.

Thanks again,

Rahmi

hi....

have you seen this link:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk365/technologies_white_paper0900aecd80244005.shtml

but for this you need specific hardware... if your network infrastructure fullfil the requirement for BFD then this will be good...

regards

Devang

Devang,

Yes I did. That is the feauture actually enabled for 12000 GSRs and up. Like everything else, Cisco develops all the good stuff for the higher end routers.

We have 7609 Routers, I dont think it can do BFD.

Thanks for the information though.

Rahmi
