OSPF Log 2WAY to DOWN Dead timer expired

I am seeing the below error message on the OSPF router. What is causing this and what action should I take?

006805: May 13 21:14:11: %OSPF-5-ADJCHG: Process 65182, Nbr 172.16.199.252 on FastEthernet1 from 2WAY to DOWN, Neighbor

Down: Dead timer expired

172.16.199.252 255 2WAY/DROTHER 00:00:36 X.X.X.X FastEthernet1

I did not see any log on 172.16.199.252 router.

Hello -

I think it just means that this Router did not received any hello packets from its neighbor 172.16.199.252 for a time interval of 4*Hello interval time.

Better check this neighbor router (if you have access to it) if that link connected to the object router have had any problems.

Yes, the neighbor router is up and the packets are routed thru the enighbour router.

Re: OSPF Log 2WAY to DOWN Dead timer expired

you need to check few things:

1) if both neighbors have the same hello and dead timers

2) if both neighbors are in the same area

3) if both neighbors use the same subnet mask

4) if both neighbors use the same authentication password (if it's used)

these settings are sent thru the hello packet. better do a debug ip ospf adj command

Also make sure the MTU matches on both sides or add ip ospf mtu-ignore on one side.
