Path Code Violations

We're having trouble with a number of T1's(7 in all) showing excessive Path Code Violations. These lines are delivered via a DS3 and broken out with an Adtran MX2800. The DS3 and the individual T's have been tested by the telco and are clean. The far end of these T's are not showing any errors. So my question is given that these T's are deliverd via a local loop DS3 how sould the individual serial interfaces be configure for clock timing?

Any advice would be greatly appriciated!!

Router is 7206VXR Version 12.2(15)T14.

Port 4 is a PA-4T1.

Can you paste the remote controller/port configs? I've seen IOS bugs w/ certain Port Adapters that falsely increment the PCV counters, however with that particular bug the LCV's incremented as well.

Actually the remote sites vary in type. All are Cisco routers, some with integrated CSU/DSU some with external Adtran TSU. The only common aspect is that the other ends are not showing any PCV/LVC or serial interface errors. The only errors I see are on the 7206 from lines coming from our local loop DS3.

Whats confusing me is PVC with no LVC... I have not found any references to this type of situation.

Any additional suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

I should note that these two interfaces are setup for Multilink PPP but other interface setup for simple HDLC are show the same problems with PCV errors.

As you were able to isolate the problem to the local loop on the DS3 side the problem appears to be on a common hardware all these T1s share. Since telco testing didn't see any errors, problem could very well be the Adtran. Have you tried power cycling the Adtran or even better if you can swap the Adtran and check the status?

Have not tried powercycling the Adtran yet. Actually, am scheduled to do testing on that unit Thursday. It has redundant controllers so I'm going to swap over to the backup controller and let it run for a few days.

No slips, so your clocking is good. No line code violations so the line code config is correct.

In my experience path code violations (though you usually see some line code errors) are cabling issues. What kind of cable are you using between the mux and the router? How long is the run?

With multiple T1s, running them all in a single cable can cause cross talk problems. Telco best practice is to use shielded 110ohm T1 cable, and run all TX pairs in one cable, and all RX pairs in another. Shields should be grounded on one end only. Another way is to run individual T1s in single Cat5 cables.

For troubleshooting maybe you could run a temporary cable for one T1.

The MUX is in the same rack as the router. I'm using Cat5 for each T1 coming out of the MUX. Most cable are only 18 inches. Could the cables be too short?

18 inches shouldn't be a problem, but you could try changing the line build-out by issuing "cablelength short" command under the controllers. I have around 15 T1's all using 48 inch Cat5e cables w/ no problems.

I would replace one of the cables on an errored T1 with a known good cable, Ideally one that has only pins 1,2,4,5 wired. T1s are very robust, and on short cables will often run with one wire broken, though with high error rates -- much like your problem.
