PBR question

Hello,

I would like to ask if it is possible to set the next hop to be an adjacent router interface that is not directly connected with the policy router? That means in router 1, I want to apply a PBR to set the next hop to be router 2 serial interface instead of LAN interface. Router 1 and Router 2 are connected to same LAN interface with its own WAN serial interface.

I think this won't work as it seems the next hop has to be a subnet that both routers sharing so the serial address in Router 2 as next hop won't work. I am hoping if there is anyway to get around it, otherwise I will have a blackhole situation that if Router 2 serial goes down, the PBR still continue to send traffic to Router 2 LAN interface and get blackhole afterwards.

Actually, PBR does allow you to use a next-hop that's not directly connected when you use the keyword 'recursive' in the 'set ip next-hop' command. If the recursive next-hop you specified becomes unavailable the router would route the traffic using the default route, if one is configured.

As far as I remmember, yes this is possible.

PBR Recursive Next Hop

The PBR Recursive Next Hop feature enhances route maps to enable configuration of a recursive next-hop IP address that is used by policy-based routing (PBR). The recursive next-hop IP address is installed in the routing table and can be a subnet that is not directly connected. If the recursive next-hop IP address is not available, packets are routed using a default route.
