ping status

You?are given?the following setup

??????????? Host A-------------------------------|---------------------Router-------------|---------------------------HostB

IP Addr A.A.A.A C.C.C.C D.D.D.D B.B.B.B

MAC ae:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa ce:cc:cc:cc:cc:cc de:dd:dd:dd:dd:dd be:bb:bb:bb:bb:bb

If you ping from Host A to Host B, how does the ICMP echo request packet look like that will be seen by HostB?

source IP@?A.A.A.A?? dest IP@ B.B.B.B

source IP@?C.C.C.C?? dest IP@ B.B.B.B

source MAC@ ce:cc:cc:cc:cc:cc dest MAC@ be:bb:bb:bb:bb:bb

source MAC@ ae:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa dest MAC@ be:bb:bb:bb:bb:bb

source MAC@de:dd:dd:dd:dd:dd dest MAC@ be:bb:bb:bb:bb:bb

Re: ping status

The L3 addresses will not change from end to end. They will remain source IP@?A.A.A.A?? dest IP@ B.B.B..

The L2 will change in transit and should be seen as follow by router B: source MAC@de:dd:dd:dd:dd:dd dest MAC@ be:bb:bb:bb:bb:bb

Hope this helps,
