If you have a MacBook Pro, you don't have a serial port. And you can't connect an Ethernet-Port to the serial-port of the switch. You need:

  1. An USB-to-Serial-Adapter (something like this)
  2. A regular Console-cable (the blue one that perhaps came with your switch)

HI i have this cable and its a console cable i just don't know how to set it up in terminal. http://www.amazon.co.uk/StarTech-Cisco-Console-Rollover-Cable/dp/B004Z9YG5W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413580192&sr=8-2&keywords=rj45+to+rj45+console+cable . Thanks

That's just a console-cable. You have to connect it to a serial port on your computer. For a MacBookPro you need something like that this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Adapter-Prolific-PL2303HX-Chipset/dp/B00425S1H8/ref=pd_sim_computers_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=1SFDM07E5GZ3G5V86983

Hi that works in a pc without serial port too? thanks

Yes, just make sure that the Chip that is used in the adapter is supported for the OS you are using.

ok thanks
