Route and name

All,

Is the name at the end of the "ip route" command just used as an identifier? I don't think it affects routing in any way, does it? We're adding floating routes to some of our routers, and we're wanting to name these.

Hello John,

Yes, the name is for identification purposes only. The IOS 12.4T Command Reference guide contains this description for the ip route command:

The name next-hop-name
keyword and argument combination allows you to associate static routes
with names in your running configuration. If you have several static
routes, you can specify names that describe the purpose of each static
route in order to more easily identify each one.
