Router 3640 with a NM-1A OC3 SMI Module

I have a router 3640 with a NM-1A OC3 SMI Module, I need to configure ATM over IP, this router support the obsolete RFC 1483, this RFC was replaced for a RFC2486, is there any problem between these 2 RFC or the Router can works transparently with RFC2486?

Is there any chance to configure or support the router in order to work according with the RFC2225 Classical IP and ARP over ATM?

luisferios,

as juackyoung mentioned, with the possible exception of clause 8.1 in rfc2684, all the the rest is supported. These updated RFCs, from '98 circa are only bringing in clarifications and expanded content, not protocol changes.

I believe all the encapsulation methods are supported. Unless you have a very particular network architecture with full mesh and in-deep understanding of the related issue, I would avoid using Classical IP and ARP and use 1483 in VC-MUX that is the simplest and most efficient configuration.

Re: Router 3640 with a NM-1A OC3 SMI Module

Check below for RFC 2684 (not 2486) for the replacement of RFC 1483.

http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2684.html

Check the section "Differences from RFC 1483", once you do not hit the new option in 2684, there should be no issue between two RFC to work. However, the NM-1A-OC3SMI is EOS and there is no such information to show it support 2684. So, it may work only at 1483.

As same as RFC 2684, the RFC 2225 replaced RFC 1577 , 1626 but the web info. of NM-1A-OC3SMI do support the old RFC only and not mention the RFC 2225. So I believe it is the same case of 1483/2684.

Check below for RFC detail and search "APPENDIX A - Update Information" for the updates of 2225 to 1577/1626.

http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc2225.html

NM-1A-OC3SMI info. :

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/routers/ps274/products_data_sheet09186a0080091b88.html

You have to check w/ the PTT to ensure they are using the compatible standard.

Hope this helps.

Re: Router 3640 with a NM-1A OC3 SMI Module

Tks a lot for your answer and sorry for the mistake about the RFC2684!!!

Is possible to use a new IOS, network module or something to upgrade the router in order to support the new RFC2684 and RFC2225?

Best Regards
