Router configuration

Hi there

I have a Cisco router which has 2 configured interfaces

E0:201.139.xx.24

E1:200.201.xx.161

E0 has three hosts

201.139.xx.25(used)

201.139.xx.26(free)

201.139.xx.27(used)

E1 has three host

200.201.xx.162(used)

200.201.xx.163(used)

200.201.xx.164(used)

I ran out of IP address for hosts in E1 subnet, is it possible to

assign E0's free IP address (201.139.xx.26)to host in E0.if yes how can

I achieve this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In normal practice the answer would be no you can not assign an address from the subnet of one interface to a host connected to another interface. The main reason for this is that the router will forward all packets with a destination address in a particular subnet to the router interface in that subnet. So if you assign 201.139.xx.26 to a host connected through E1 the router will try to send the packet through E0.

The usual solution if you run out of addresses on an interface is to configure another subnet on the interface with a secondary address and use the addresses in the additional subnet, or the solution migh be to change the subnet mask to a value that provides more hosts (from /28 to /27 for example). This presumes that the additional addresses are available and not in use in some other part of the network.
