Pls i need someone to help with this issue. I configured a router and upon restarting it says wrong password. From the cisco site, i got how to break into the router and reset the password. I got into the rommon mode and typed confreg 0x2142, and type reset. Ever since then, the router has refused to come up. I have had to restart it and it comes up with funny characters like "?uuuuuuuuuuuuuu????? $b???? ???&???AC???? ?????????? ???????
PR9?B?!?????????A
CC????$???????????????????????D????? ??????? ?????D?????????
???????????$????
?b????????&???????&???ACC???????????$?o
?????????b?????$??????????b??????????"
I need to put the router right, please someone to help me.

Hi ,
Try out the following ..
change the hyperterminal baud rate to 1200 and then reboot the router ,immediately press the ctrl+break key to go in rommon mode.
(If the router is not in rommon mode then try to change baud rate till 152000).
Check the dir flash to look for an valid ios image and then type boot command to boot the router with the ios image from the flash
Change the config register setting to 0x2102 by using confreg command.
Password recovery :
Reboot the router to the rommon mode.
Baud rate of the hyperterminal should be 9600
Change the config register setting to 0x2142 by using the confreg command.
Type reset to reload the router.
Type enable and go to enable mode.
Type copy start run command to copy the start-up settings to the dram.
Type sh run and then sh start to see if the configuration is same.
Then go to the configuration mode by typing the config t command.
Enter the new enable password by using the enable secret command.
Then change the config setting to 0x2102 by using the config-register command.
Press ctrl-z to go back to enable mode
and copy the running config to start config
then reload the router.
Hope it helps you.
Thanks,
Satish

Hello Sly,
are you connected to the router through the console port ? If so, try to change to different speeds on your Hyperterminal (or whatever you are using). The 'rubbish' characters you see usually come from a speed mismatch...

Thank you very much for you prompt response. I am connected to the router via a console port. what speed do you think i should use, because this is the speed i have been using on other routers and even when i was attempting to break the password.
Pls i would if you could give me some speed types. thanks once again.

I believe that GNT and Satish have pointed you in the right direction. The kind of garbage characters that you describe are classic symptoms of mismatch of speed setting. I am guessing that when you were in rommon you may have forgotten the 0x in setting the config register or may have mistyped a digit.
The range of console speeds depends on the model of router that you have and we do not know what router you are working on. In general all routers support console speed of 1200, 2400, 4800, and 9600. Some routers support speeds higher than that up to 152000.
Especially if you are using Hyperterm it is advisable to stop Hyperterm and start it again after changing the console speed setting.
