Pls i need someone to help with this issue. I configured a router and upon restarting it says wrong password. From the cisco site, i got how to break into the router and reset the password. I got into the rommon mode and typed confreg 0x2142, and type reset. Ever since then, the router has refused to come up. I have had to restart it and it comes up with funny characters like "?uuuuuuuuuuuuuu????? $b???? ???&???AC???? ?????????? ???????
are you connected to the router through the console port ? If so, try to change to different speeds on your Hyperterminal (or whatever you are using). The 'rubbish' characters you see usually come from a speed mismatch...
Thank you very much for you prompt response. I am connected to the router via a console port. what speed do you think i should use, because this is the speed i have been using on other routers and even when i was attempting to break the password.
Pls i would if you could give me some speed types. thanks once again.
I believe that GNT and Satish have pointed you in the right direction. The kind of garbage characters that you describe are classic symptoms of mismatch of speed setting. I am guessing that when you were in rommon you may have forgotten the 0x in setting the config register or may have mistyped a digit.
The range of console speeds depends on the model of router that you have and we do not know what router you are working on. In general all routers support console speed of 1200, 2400, 4800, and 9600. Some routers support speeds higher than that up to 152000.
Especially if you are using Hyperterm it is advisable to stop Hyperterm and start it again after changing the console speed setting.
This is actually a pretty cool feature, i didn't even know it existed until I was looking for a solution to advertise a subnet (prefix in BGP talk), only if a certain condition existed. This is exactly what conditional advertisements does
