with SDSL you can build a point-to-point service like using two serial interfaces: they can be even connected back to back without going through a service provider infrastructure.

For this reasons they say SDSL can be seen as a private line as a form of leased line.
SDSL is able to have one side to behave as CPE (ATU-R) and one as CO (ATU-C) the service is symmetric and simply they need to change the frequencies to change behavior.
With ADSL you have asymmetric bandwidth and this point to point capability is not available and you need to use the provider data infrastructure because each ADSL link is terminated at CO on a ATU-R modem on the DSLAM.
