sh ip route command output

Hi,

In the show ip route network_A command shows no subnet in routing table. But we could ping the ip address. How to check default route of router ? Does router shows default route when it didnt find particular route in routing table.

Thanx in advance

Subodh

Re: sh ip route command output

The default route could show in two places:

As the "Gateway of Last Resort"

or

as S 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 {gateway address} in the routing table ("S" is a static route).

The default route can be entered two ways:

One with a "next-hop" gateway address or one with just an interface listed.

i.e.,

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.1.1.1 (10.1.1.1 would be the upstream router / gateway address)

or

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 s0/0

The difference between the two is how the routing protocol / router will adjust the routing table (if possible) when the normal egress interface goes down.

Re: sh ip route command output

Hi,

when u see the show ip route command output

by seeing this below Line you can check whether default route is set or not.

Gateway of last resort not set

or

Gateway of last resort set using X.X.X.X

This is used when u dont have any route to a particular network in your routing table.

to set the gateway of last resort u can configure by using the default-network command or the static route

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 (outgoing interface / next-hop IP)

HTH,

Thanks

Raj
