SPA-4XT-SERIAL Module Installation Issue on 6513 Switch

Level 1

I have installed the 7600-SIP-200 and SPA-4XT-SERIAL modules in the 6513 switch. Both modules have been detected. But, I received following error message:

“SLOT 1: 00:00:04: %SPA_OIR-3-UNSUPPORTED: The SPA-4XT-SERIAL in Subslot 0 is not supported by the SIP-200 module”

I had upgraded the IOS and had also changed the slot but still the same issue.

When I checked the Cisco documentation for 6500 switch, it says that it supports 7600-SIP-200 and SPA-4XT-SERIAL modules. "show module" of the router is as follows:

MOFWAN-6513#sh module

Hello Haseeb,

I don't see this SPA listed among supported ones in

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/shared_port_adapters/install_upgrade/6500series/6500sov.html#wp1052051

see also sip200 datasheet

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps368/product_data_sheet0900aecd8027c9df_ps708_Products_Data_Sheet.html

there is an 8 T1/E1 channelized SPA but not the one you have.

My guess is that this SPA may be supported on a different platform like ASR 1000.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Haseeb and Giuseppe,

The SPA-4XT-SERIAL is not supported in any version of the 6500 right now. This module runs on the ASR and 7600 SRC1 or later software.

Regards,

jerry

Hello Giuslar,

Please check the attached JPEG snapshots which highlights that it is supported.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Haseeb

Hello Haseeb,

I agree that documentation is measleading, however the first link I had provided is C6500 specific

>> I don't see this SPA listed among supported ones in

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/shared_port_adapters/install_upgrade/6500series/6500sov.html#wp1052051

the SPA is listed in SIP-200 datasheet

see also table 1-5 of serial SPA compatibility at

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/interfaces_modules/shared_port_adapters/install_upgrade/6500series/65intro.html#wp1062884

again that SPA is not listed

generally speaking, I would suggest to use URLs instead of jpeg images

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi,

Please check the following link which was mentioned in the snapshot:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps368/product_data_sheet0900aecd8027c9df.html

I verified using the dynamic configuration tool and added these modules to the 6500 switch. It returned no error.

Hello Haseeb,

>> I verified using the dynamic configuration tool and added these  modules to the 6500 switch. It returned no error.

but the real C6513 accepts the SPA now or not ? Is only the SW tool that  provides a positive feedback?

I agree that SIP-200 datasheet supports the SPA  and it is listed in its data sheet, and it is reasonable to expect the SPA should be supported once the SIP-200 linecard is inserted in a C6513 chassis instead of C7609.

But when you started this thread you faced an issue in the error messages pointing to not recognized hardware.

So looking at SIP/SPA configuration guide for C6500 (the links I've provided) this specific SPA is not listed, it can be just an error in documentation or it can reflect a real choice of IOS developers.

I see you have IOS 12.2(33)SXH6 you can try a 12.2(33)SXI2 just as a final check with last release.

Edit:

I would suggest to test with 12.2(33)SXI because it has a greater support of service modules like FWSM, ACE and CSM.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Hi Haseeb,

I was referring to error you mentioned and link provided below

http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/Support/Errordecoder/index.cgi?action=search&index=all&locale=en&query=SPA_OIR-3-UNSUPPORTED&counter=0&paging=5&links=reference&sa=Submit

This suggested to open TAC so that can be verified through cisco...

Hello Shailesh,

Jerry, that is a Cisco employee, has confirmed that the SPA is not supported on a C6500.

It is clearly an implementation choice made by Cisco.

I agree that opening a SR with TAC could provide a further confirmation of this.

Hope to help

Giuseppe
