Static route outgoing Int vs next-hop address.

Hi.In terms of what I need to know for the Icnd 1 does It matter whether I specify the outgoing Interface (either by name or ip address) or the next hop ip address for configuring static routes ?

I've read somewhere there's a difference but It seems beyond the scope of what little I've learnt so far.
