static route

can a static route point to a management ip of gateway instead of the next hop of the gateway.

in an mpls network can a static route point to a gateway which is not the next hop to the destination network.

So long as the address that you are specifying is reachable the static route should work. Cisco uses recursive lookup in resolving static routes, so if the static route next hop is not directly connected the router will look into the routing table to find how to get to the specified address. So a static with the management address of the gateway should work.

I believe you can point to a not directly connected next hop.

Router will do a recursive table lookup for finding the exit interface for your destination.

thanks all..one more thing is can the dest. be an ip add. itself or a network bcos in firewall it's an ip

and on router it's a network.
