Hi there,
I'm definitely a noob when it comes to Cisco and IOS. I've been struggling to configure a core and edge switch with two 3548s. I can navigate the CLI pretty well and I get the vlan concept, but I'm unsure how Vlans work together in Cisco environment. Do I need more than vlan1? Basically all I need is for the two switches to talk to each other, but at this point I can't even get the link lights to come on when I plugin ethernet cables. Is it a STP or BPDU issue? I've tried changing the switchport mode, and can't understand why I get invalid input when I type int port-channel 1, even though it's listed as an available command. I'm either missing the broad picture or a minor detail. Please help!

3500XL switches are old. So they won't understand BPDU Guard.
Are the switch connected using cross-over cable?
