T1 Controller setup

I just got a new 2811 and put in a VWIC-2MFT-T1 card. This is going to be a border router with a T1 connection to two separate ISPs. I need to configure the two T1 interfaces but can't figure out how. I get this when I do a 'sh controller t1'

Transmitter is sending remote alarm.

Receiver has loss of signal.

alarm-trigger is not set

Framing is ESF, Line Code is B8ZS, Clock Source is Line.

I go into config mode but can't figure out where I need to go to configure the controllers so I can get a serial interface. Any help is appreciated.

Hello,

the previous reply make a lot of confusion.

The command "no-crc4" is not applicable to T1 interfaces. Your choices are SF and ESF with the latter being much more likely.

it also assumes that encapsulation has to be PPP, thing that is not ablsutely said. As your ISP and they may tell you that cisco HDLC is default unless you want PPP (there is no reson for wanting so).

And yes, you can reuse the same channel-group number for both interfaces as these will be distinguished by their numbering anyway.

Now please check you cabling to telco demarc because you have loss of signal. Please use specific T1 cable and not any ethernet patch that has different pair twisting.

Hi,

There are only two - three commands to configure a T1.

Conf t

controller t1

channel-group {64,56}

no-crc4

No shut

After that One Serial Interface will pop-up automatically:

Configure on that serial interface

int serial {No}

encap ppp/isdn/hdlc/frame-relay/atm

Ip address {IP address with subnetmask}

no shut

Thank you for your response, it was very helpful. A question about the channel-group command, since this VWIC card has two T1 ports (T1 0/0/0 and T1 0/0/1) do I need to use different channel groups or can I use 0 for both (i.e. channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24 speed 64)?

Thank you for clearing that up. I haven't been given the IP addresses or encapsulation for the circuit yet but I needed to get to the point where I could configure the serial interfaces on the card.

After configuring channel-group under controller T1, the serial interface will appear and you can configure it.
