track sreial and shut down ethernet

Is there any way to track a serial interface on a router, if it goes down, shut down the ethernet.

When the serial comes up, bring up the etherent?

Are you talking of something like HSRP/VRRP to track interfaces?

Could you elaborate on your exact requirement?

Re: track sreial and shut down ethernet

I have a problem with a router that is not on the edge, but the ethernet inteface needs to know the status of the edge router serial interface:

Not quite sure whether one could trigger an event(like interface shutdown) with object tracking?

Can't you think of a routing solution such that your IP2IP gateway originated traffic could be routed via DR upon failure of the Serial interface?

Wilson,

Embedded Event Manager might work for you. I have used this in the past for other things. Look at example 3 in this link:

whoa daddy!,

The looks like something that would work.

Does Cisco have any sample scripts?

Thanks for the reply.

lots of samples here. EEM is getting lots of new stuff added lately so you need to check the EEM feature you want to use is in your IOS version.

Re: track sreial and shut down ethernet

You wouldn't need a script for this. You could use an EEM applet such as something like this:

http://forum.cisco.com/eforum/servlet/NetProf?page=netprof&forum=Network%20Infrastructure&topic=LAN%2C%20Switching%20and%20Routing&CommCmd=MB%3Fcmd%3Dpass_through%26location%3Doutline%40%5E1%40%40.1dddb7ff/6#selected_message

(Adapted for your interfaces, of course).

If you have specific questions about writing EEM policies, ask them in the Network Management forum.
