Turning physical signals into packets!!

hi

We have a situation where an old SMS server system needs to communicate to other servers via PSTN. I was told to figure out a way to relay these signals through the wan. What I need to do is to connect the server via an RS232 cable to a router (on a port or a module of some sort) and packetize the signals,send it through the WAN and do the reverse in the branch office so that these servers can communicate.

Is this possible? Does any one have an idea?

A terminal server is a device that converts RS232 to packets (usually TCP). One side connects to a serial port and the other side is Ethernet. A quick Google search turned up this one:

We use "Lantronix" terminal servers with great success. They configure very easily and simply hang off of a switchport.
