VLAN is shut down when enabling another VLAN

situation:

VLAN1 active without IP address

VLAN8 shutdown without IP address

proble:

if i configure VLAN 8 with an IP address and then activate the VLAN ( NO shutdown command ) the following happens

VLAN8 becomes active but VLAN1 suddenly shuts down ???

If I then shutdown VLAN8, VLAN1 becomes back active AND suddenly has the configured IP address of VLAN8 ???

Re: VLAN is shut down when enabling another VLAN

It sounds like you are running a layer2 switch. That's a normal behavior. In order to have more than one SVI (Switch Virtual Interface) up, you need a layer3 device.

Keep in mind, you can multiple layer2 VLANs stored in the VLAN database. What you are currently doing is creating multiple layer3 interfaces.

Re: VLAN is shut down when enabling another VLAN

Is it an issue if VLAN1 is shutdown ( because this is the "management VLAN" ) ?

Re: VLAN is shut down when enabling another VLAN

Hi Dax

Since it is a layer 2 switych you cannot have more than one active switched virtual interface(SVI) on your switch.

If you assign a new VLAN interface ip address to an L2 switch and there is an active port in that vlan, the new interafce will become active and the old will automatically get disabled.

IT has nothing to do with Management VLAN

Dax,

You can shutdown VLAN1 SVI without problems. The layer2 VLAN1 will still remain active.
