Hi Aateek, Voice labs can be

Hi Aateek,

Voice labs can be built a lot of different ways, are you preparing for a certification? The most basic lab I can think of would consist of:

-1  2811 router (FXS/FXO cards are optional, only if you plan to test with analog phones)

-1 POE switch, 3560 / 3750 with 15.x IOS will give you a lot of features, make sure they're POE.

-A couple of phones, 7940s/7960s are basic, 7961s could carry over for more advanced training in the future.

Advanced lab for certifications CCNP V - CCIE Collab

- 1 29XX router with PVDM3s.

- 2-3 28XX routers with PVDM2s.

- 9971/7961s phones.

- A few 3750 poe switches.

- Server to run CUCM applications on.

Thanks,

2 voice lab can be useful to

2 voice lab can be useful to simulate 2 offices or 1 office -> PSTN. You could connect them via PRI ( you would need T1/E1 1MFT card) or you could connect them via SIP trunks and no special cards are needed, just connection to the switch. The 2nd router can act as a remote PSTN/PBX, it all depends on your configuration.

Thank you Francisco is it

Thank you Francisco
is it possible to make a router act as a remote PBX ?
do you have any Doc to share ?if yes please share that would be very helpful for me to learn and setup a voice lab and make a router act as a PBX

Sure, for voice labs you must

Sure, for voice labs you must learn how to use CME. You can use CME on both routers, 1 will configure like an office with extensions and the other router you configure like a PBX with city area codes and numbers. This is a lot of information, a lot of learning, and playing/practice. Here's the link:

You can buy a used "Adtran"

You can buy a used "Adtran" from Ebay, I had one and used a little bit for PRIs to the "PSTN". You will have to learn how to use it, I recommend mastering CME on both routers, you can simulate a PBX very well with it.

Good Luck and rate if useful ! : )

Hi Francisco

I have created a scenario
Two router(2811) are connected with each other from T1 port (both having NM-HDV2-1T1/E1 module )
with One router to simulate as a "PSTN router" having one VIC2-2FXS port connecting one analog phone. And other router will
be our "Lab router" connecting ip phone with a switch(PoE) .Both routers having DSP to convert digital to analog signal and analog to digital signal.

Please Guide me if I'm wrong?

Great job! You are correct.

Great job! You are correct. On the "PSTN" router you can simulate PSTN with an analog phone with (pots) dial peer or you can use a 7960 phone with 6 lines and assign 7 digit, 10 digit, 11 digit, 911, international numbers to it. That way you can test on your lab with different scenarios.

This weekend I will go home and set up a lab just like you want, and share my configs.

Thank you so much Francisco.

Hi Francisco

I had one question in mind so couldn't wait to ask

If i have Two ip phones and a cucm(60 days free trial, which is installed in a laptop) then is a call possible between two
ip phones phones?
As according to theory ip phone has a small dsp installed in it as apposed to an analog phones. So is it possible?

If you take a snapshot after

If you take a snapshot after you've installed CUCM you can revert to the snapshot to reset the 60 day timeout. If you export the configuration using "BAT Export" you can reimport it after reverting to the snapshot or reinstalling. So the 60 day timeout is not much of an issue.

Hi Joey

I was trying to download Cucm 60 days free trial version
But i received this message from cisco site

To Download this software, you must have a valid service contract associated to your Cisco.com profile.
If you do not have a service contract you can get one through:

  • Your Cisco Account Team if you have a direct purchase agreement with Cisco
  • Your Cisco Partner or Reseller
Once you have the service contract you must associate your service contract to your Cisco.com user ID with Profile Manager

It means if i don't have a sevice contract or any purchase from cisco partner i won't be able to download Trial version ?
Is there any other way to get Cucm free trial version or am i following the wrong steps?

Please help

I do not know how to

I do not know how to download a "free trial version". In fact, the images downloadable from CCO are not bootable so my earlier advice was wrong.

Have a look for an "NFR" (not for resale) kit. I think they are a few hundred dollars.

Hi Joey

I have successfully installed CUCM trial version in VMware  i.e in my laptop
and successfully registered 2 ip phones with Cucm
But i got stuck in one place

I have one doubt my scenario is that i have a Cucm installed in my laptop in VMware and 2 ip phones are connected to it

where both ip phones are connected to my ASA 5505 POE port , My ASA is my default gateway .DHCP is also configured in ASA giving TFTP address as that of CUCM
Now my question is that what if I want to connect an IP communicator which is installed in a laptop and who is in different network with my CUCM

do i have to make a dial peer ? voice gateway or what ?

Please help as i'm still learning

Any advice will be great and appreciated

Aateek, Your IP communicator

Aateek,

Your IP communicator behaves like a phone, you need to create the device in CUCM so it registers. You can find the MAC address by right clicking the IP communicator -> Preferences -> Network -> SEPXXXXXXXX. You can add the address of the TFTP server in this window too. Create the device in CUCM and it will register.

Thank you Francisco But i'm

Thank you Francisco

But i'm confused in one thing if my network is in 10.1.1.0

and i want to add an ip communicator which is in different location and network let say 20.1.1.1 and if that network communicates with mine i.e with my ASA (Gateway of mine network ) then what to do next ?

how the ip communicator will know which route to take ?
Or i have to first manually add the device name in the Cucm ?
what else i have to take care of?

Yes, You can use the phones

Yes, You can use the phones without a Voice Router, just setup DHCP in your switch and point TFTP ip address to the CUCM. Then on CUCM enable registration for the phones and you can make calls. =)

Hi Fransico,

Hi Fransico,

Can I use one router for the SIP trunk and another for the CME? I use a 2811 for my home router. But I have another 2811 for labs. How can I build a SIP lab? I have a free SIP trunk with a service provider I want to use

Hey,You can build a pretty

Hey,

You can build a pretty sophisticated lab for CUCM exercises without any voice hardware at all, except maybe a POE switch, using two CUCM VMs with trunks between them.

We're building out a dial plan for an example enterprise with ten sites distributed across Canada and posting recordings of the process. We aren't using any routers for this. If you want to see our progress look here:

http://www.ashbridgesbay.ca/about-our-progress

Of course if you need to learn about voice gateway configuration then you'll need at least one router, but preferably two, with one simulating the PSTN, so you can run back to back voice connections (i.e. FXO to FXS, PRI User to PRI Network, T1-CAS to T1-CAS). It's no secret the entire GK lab environment is based on back to back connections of two 2811s.

But, if you can't afford voice gateway hardware, you can still do a vast amount of exercises with two CUCM VMs alone (dial plan configuration, class of service, extension mobility, global transformations, SNR, and so on).

Good luck,

Joey
