what is SFP

when u go thru the brousure of cisco switches , we will find most of the managable switches mentiones some thing SFP i.e

48 10/100 + 2 SFP ip base image

48 10/100/1000T + 4 SFP IP service image

and so on

what is this SFP ?

Its nothing but number of optic ports available in your switch.

SFP stands for Small Form Factor Pluggable fiber optic ports..

Hi, SFP (Small form-factor pluggable) is a gigabit port. You have differents types, for copper and fiber optic (monomode or multimode).

When you have a description "48 10/100 + 2 SFP ip base image" this means that you have a switch with 48 10/100 ports and to slots where you can put SFPs interfaces, you have to decide what type you need.
