I wonder what is the difference between them.

and, What is the major purpose of each device?

Hi

AFAIK its the Optical services modules (OSMs) which makes the difference between these 2 boxes.

Cisco 7600 have the support for the OSMs below mentioned are the modules supported in 7600 series boxes..

• Cisco 7600 Series 4-, 8-, and 16-Port OC-3c/STM-1 POS/SDH OSM

• Cisco 7600 Series 4-Port Gigabit Ethernet OSM

• Cisco 7600 Series 1-Port Channelized OC-12/STM-4 to DS-3/E3 OSM

• Cisco 7600 Series 1-Port OC-48c/STM-16 POS/SDH OSM

• Cisco 7600 Series 2- and 4-Port OC-12c/STM-4 POS/SDH OSM

• Cisco 7600 Series 2-Port ATM OSM:

• Cisco 7600 Series 2-Port OC-48c/1-Port OC-48c DPT OSM

Also 6500 is being used as the core switches in normal datacenters,LAN and 7600 being used in aggregation points mainly in metro area networks.

for more info on switching capacity, backplane architecture you can refer the datasheets of both 7600 and 6500

Re: What is the difference Cat6500 & C7600?

Marketing.

Cat6500 and Cat7600 are the exact same chassis, use the exact same SUP/MSFC, and are compatible with the same modules.

If you contact your sales folks and tell them you need a core switch for your network, they'll tell you that you need a 6500.

Contact the same people and tell them you need a core router, to do optical and whatnot, they'll sell you a 7600.

The only difference between the two are the markings on the front.
