Cisco access-points not joining WLC

Hi All,

We have an issue where APs not joining WLC.  AP is 3500 and WLC is 5508. When  we do a manual registration,we do not have any issues. However, this is not  happening automatically. I cannot ask the customer to go for manual way, since  he has around 70 APs. The APs and WLC get IP from an external DHCP server. All  APs are able to ping the WLC and vice-versa.Any idea on this,

Thanks in Advance .

Naidu.

Re: Cisco access-points not joining WLC

Do you have option 43 or DNS of Cisco-capwap-controller mapped to the management interface configured?

Thanks for replying Stepen.

We do have option 43 mapped to mgmt interface.

can you capture the console of an AP as it boots, gets DHCP and, hopefully, attempts to join the controller?  if you could, also get the following from the WLC:

debug mac-address  < ap mac address>

debug capwap errors enable

debug capwap events enable

Re: Cisco access-points not joining WLC

Hi Stephen ,

The access point is sending discovery messages but the controller is ignoring the discovery message.

thanks,

Yerri,

You did not answer if you have created a DNS entry for the 55008 controller. I advice that you create a local host entry, cisco-capwap-controller on DNS with the controller management IP. Also you would need to enable Option 15 in the dhcp scope and type in your domain name. This method will guarantee the AP getting a response from the controller. Don't be keen on Option 43 working in a domain.
