Upgrade Steps - Mobility Services Engine Application on a Cisco Virtual or Physical Appliance

Introduction

Steps to Upgrade the Mobility Services Engine Application on a Cisco Virtual or Physical Appliance

Solution

Download either the larger .tar (CISCO-MSE-L-K9-7-x-xxx-xxx-64bit-db.tar) or the smaller .bin.gz (CISCO-MSE-L-K9-x-x-xxx-xxx-64bit.bin.gz) file from Cisco.com.

  1. The larger file includes the Oracle database if your intention is to wipe the DB and start anew or this is a fresh install
  2. The smaller file is the executable to upgrade the application if the database is to be kept intact
  3. Login to the MSE as the root user then cd to the /opt/installers directory
  4. Ftp the file from an ftp server to that directory being sure to transfer in binary mode
  5. Stop the MSE services by issuing the service msed stop command
  6. Cd to the /opt/mse/uninstall directory then run ./uninstall or simply run /opt/mse/uninstall/uninstall.sh
  7. Here you will be prompted to keep the DB and license file(s) intact or no
  8. If you plan to wipe the existing DB, be sure to make a backup of the .lic file(s) in the /opt/mse/licensing directory
  9. Once the MSE application has been removed, cd to the /opt/installers directory then unpack the files using the steps noted below

               If .bin.bz then

                    a)      gunzip CISCO-MSE-L-K9-x-x-xxx-xxx-64bit.bin.gz

                    b)      chmod +x CISCO-MSE-L-K9-x-x-xxx-xxx-64bit.bin

                If .tar then

                     a)      tar –xvf CISCO-MSE-L-K9-7-x-xxx-xxx-64bit-db.tar

                     b)      gunzip CISCO-MSE-L-K9-x-x-xxx-xxx-64bit.bin.gz

                     c)      chmod +x CISCO-MSE-L-K9-x-x-xxx-xxx-64bit.bin

Now the executables have been unpacked, all you need to do is go through the installation by executing

                     a)      ./CISCO-MSE-L-K9-x-x-xxx-xxx-64bit.bin

Note: If the Aeroscout tag engine is being used, you'll need to involve their technical support group to get the Aeroscout software and license(s) reinstalled
